I grew up with my Italian grandmother who could make a great meat sauce from scratch and I’m sure she did often before raising four children. Somewhere along the way, she revised her recipe to include some “pre-made” ingredients (gasp!) and you know what? It was still very good. All the traditional flavors still there but in about 1/2 the time. I love to make this sauce, the aroma that floats through our house is amazing and the taste is flavorful. Of course like most sauces, it’s even better the next day. So here is my Grandma’s yummy meat sauce, part homemade, part convenience.
In a large pot add…1lb browned ground beef and/or Italian sausage (your choice), 1-2 cups sautéed mushrooms, 1 jar of classic spaghetti sauce, 16 oz of tomato sauce, 1 tsp each of oregano, basil, and garlic powder, 1-2 bay leaves, a few dashes of brown sugar and some red wine. Simmer partially covered 1-2 hours stirring occasionally. The longer you cook, the thicker the sauce will be, it’s personal preference. Add cooked pasta, crusty bread with balsamic and olive oil, a glass of red wine and voila! Yummy dinner!
