Starving Student Month…

Starving Student MonthYears ago I read a great way to save money is to live like a starving college student. Great advice I thought, but how long would I really be able to stick to it? Or want to? I’ve been out of college for a while and don’t really miss it. Then I thought, I could do this for a month. It could be a fun challenge and interesting to see how much additional I could save in a month. So I got my husband on board and we lived like starving college students for the month of September to coincide with back to school. Guess what? The challenge was actually kind of fun and knowing it was for only a month not too difficult. So what did we change? A lot. No eating out, no day trips, no iTunes purchases, no pedicures, no new clothes, no buying anything we didn’t need to survive. No fancy cheese or cured meats, no shellfish, no pre-made dishes, no wine over $10 a bottle, you get the idea. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like we spend thousands of dollars on these things every month, but we do indulge occasionally and it adds up. At the end of the month we had a substantial savings and it felt good so we decided to make it a tradition. This year will be our 5th and I’ve actually been looking forward to it. In addition to the extra savings it kind of resets our standards and reminds us to be more practical with our spending. Plus, it’s good to head into the holiday season with a little extra cash in your back pocket. I would encourage anybody looking to save a few extra bucks to try it out. One month really goes by fast and you might be pleasantly surprised by the results. Then you can have fun deciding what you are going to spend all that money on

Funny! This goes right along with when people ask me how I keep my figure. I respond, “I’m on the Malnutrition Diet!” 😀
